Allan Pascua, Aged Residential Care Liaison & Specialist Palliative Care Unit (SPCU) Nurse
What is/are your role(s) at Nelson Tasman Hospice?
I’ve got a bit of a split personality at Nelson Tasman Hospice—by night, I’m in the inpatient unit, making sure everyone’s well cared for while they sleep. By day, I’m the ARC liaison nurse, supporting patients, whanau, and care teams.
What do you find most rewarding about the work that you do?
I believe everyone carries a unique gem of wisdom, often without realising it. My work allows me the privilege of uncovering these insights and learning from each person’s journey. This opportunity to connect and grow with others makes each day truly rewarding.
What is a myth about Hospice services that you would like to dispel?
Hospice doesn’t mean stopping all treatments- it means prioritising comfort and choosing care that aligns with the patient’s goals.
What is something people might be surprised to know about you?
There was a time I wanted to become a Priest; I’ve always found peace in quiet moments of prayer, like sitting in a church pew at sunrise and at the golden hours in the afternoon. I even spent a year in a Seminary before realizing that path wasn’t meant for me, though the experience remains deeply meaningful.
