Know us for when you need us
Dr Jodie Battley, Medical Director
What is your role at Nelson Tasman Hospice?
I am a palliative medicine doctor and the Medical Director at Nelson Tasman Hospice. I lead the medical team and provide direct and indirect care to patients. I also work closely with my colleagues in the senior leadership team to ensure we are delivering a high quality, sustainable, effective and efficient service to our patients and their whānau.
What does a working day look like for you?
My day can be hugely varied and is never boring. Alongside my leadership role, I work medically across the clinical service providing oversight and care to patients in the community, the Hospice inpatient unit, and hospital. A significant part of my role is the provision of support, education and training for our clinical team and other healthcare providers.
What do you find the most rewarding about the work that you do? For me the most rewarding and privileged work I do is working with patients and their whānau, establishing what is important to them, and controlling symptoms working with our interdisciplinary team to improve their quality of life. Sitting down with a patient is the best part of my day.
You’re stranded on a deserted island with two things with you. What are they?
A fishing rod and a trunk full of books, because I haven’t taken time to read a book in ages, at least one of those books would need to be “A Survival Guide for Dummies”.
