Know us for when you need us
Victoria Burgos Molina
Senior Nurse
What is your role at Nelson Tasman Hospice?
I’m a Senior Palliative Care Nurse, mainly based in the Specialist Palliative Care Unit, but I also support patients in the community when needed. I’m also currently orientating for the in-reach team at the hospital, which allows me to work across different parts of the hospice service. I really enjoy the variety. Every day is different, and I get to support patients and their whānau, manage symptoms, and ensure people are as comfortable and well-cared-for as possible.
What is a myth about hospice services that you would like to dispel?
A common myth about hospice is that it’s only for older people. It isn’t. We support adults of many ages who are living with a life-limiting illness and need extra care. Hospice is about comfort, dignity, and helping people live in the way that feels right for them, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Care is tailored to the person, not their age.
What do you find most rewarding about the work that you do?
For me, it’s the connection with people and their whānau. You’re welcomed into their lives, often into their homes at a time when life can feel fragile and things are shifting. They trust you with their fears, routines, and the small details that matter most to them. Being able to provide support, manage symptoms, and offer clarity in these vulnerable moments is an honour.
In your opinion, what food should everyone try at least once in their lives?
Roasted artichoke flowers. I tried them in Spain, and they were unforgettable. They don’t look like much, but the flavour is incredible. One of the best things I have ever eaten.
