Discover What’s Different at the New “Op Shop on Vanguard”!

Nelson Tasman Hospice is excited to announce the relocation of its Bridge Street Op Shop to a vibrant new home in the heart of Nelson’s op shop precinct – Op Shop on Vanguard.

Opening Saturday 16th of August, this purposefully designed space offers a refreshed and inspiring op shop experience, setting itself apart in a street full of second-hand gems. More than just a shop, it’s a destination for bargain hunters, treasure seekers, and conscious consumers alike – and now, also a centralised donation space.

So, what’s different?

Op Shop on Vanguard has been thoughtfully designed with donors, volunteers, and shoppers in mind. It combines traditional op shop offerings – including quality furniture – with a warm, welcoming layout that encourages browsing, connection, and community engagement. The shop is now a central Nelson location, making it easier than ever to drop off quality items you no longer need. Staff and volunteers are ready to assist with donations seven days a week.

With its location in a high-traffic, easily accessible area and plenty of parking, the new shop is part of a growing op shop precinct. Whether you’re after retro finds, designer pieces, upcycled treasures, or something uniquely vintage, you’ll find slightly different options that reflect the quality that our Hospice shops are known for.

There’s also space around the shop to explore new opportunities – including “pop-up” style events and collaborative projects – as we continue to develop how Hospice retail connects with the community.

“Op Shop on Vanguard is for everyone,” says Donna Ching-Tregidga, Head of Supporter Engagement & Income Development at Nelson Tasman Hospice. “Whether you’re a vintage lover, a value-conscious shopper, or just curious – you’ll feel right at home.”

Volunteers needed!

As the shop prepares to open 7 days a week, Nelson Tasman Hospice is calling for community volunteers to help bring this new retail space to life.

“We couldn’t do this without our volunteers,” says Donna. “They are the heart of what we do – sorting donations, serving customers, or just being a friendly face. We’d love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved.”

No previous experience is needed – just a positive attitude and a few spare hours. Shifts are flexible, and full training and support will be provided. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, and make a meaningful contribution to hospice care in our region.

The shop will be open 7 days, offering flexible hours for shopping, donating, and volunteering – so there’s always time to swing by and find (or drop off) a treasure.

As with all Hospice shops, every purchase helps fund free specialist palliative care for 210 patients and their whānau across the Nelson Tasman region every month. Supporting the shop means supporting compassionate care for locals facing life-limiting illness.

Join us on opening day Saturday 16th August from 9:30am at 31 Vanguard Street – there’ll be a ribbon-cutting, BBQ run by the local RRT, and a few surprises for early visitors.

Come discover what makes this shop different – it’s not just a place to shop – it’s a hive of activity where people come to be part of something bigger.

We would also like to acknowledge our Bridge Street donors, volunteers, customers and staff past and present for their amazing support.  We look forward to seeing you all at Op Shop on Vanguard.
