The Stage is Set: NBS Dancing for a Cause Returns This Weekend

The stage is set and the sequins are shining as NBS Dancing for a Cause makes its grand return to the Trafalgar Centre this Friday and Saturday, promising two unforgettable nights of dance, celebration, and heartfelt community support – all in aid of Nelson Tasman Hospice.

Now in its fourth edition, this spectacular charity dance competition features 10 local personalities who have spent months training in ballroom styles alongside their experienced dance partners – and almost a year tirelessly fundraising. The event is expected to attract over 4,000 attendees across both nights.

This year’s competitors include:

  • Ed Shuttleworth, Sport Tasman CEO
  • Lauretta Haskell, Deputy Principal at Motueka South School
  • Anna Hay, Owner of Four Square Brightwater
  • Ritchie Norriss, Owner of Norriss Building
  • Steph Collett, Owner of Telfer Electrical Wholesalers
  • Blair Cameron, World Bank consultant
  • Campbell Rollo, Nelson City Councillor
  • Jayde Howe, BNZ Financial Adviser
  • Wendy Blincoe, Sales Consultant The Car Company
  • Rhys Black, Operations Manager, IFS Growth

Their dance partners include returning champion Hazel Black, Anthony Hewson, Brooke Silke-Atkins, Craig Tobin, Derryn French, Lauren Phyfer, Oliver Black, Rebecca Higham, and Zara Fowler.

Dance instructor and event project manager Emma Silke-French, who has been with the event from the start in 2017, says excitement is high among both the dancers and the organisers:

“The best outcome is going to be lots of money raised for Hospice, increased awareness about the services they provide, and a sense of pride for all our contestants. We can’t wait!”

Judges for the event include Dancing with the Stars NZ regulars Vanessa and Scott Cole, as well as former Dancing with the Stars NZ judge Alison Leonard. While the Judges’ Choice will determine the official winner on the Saturday night, the audience will also crown a Yondi Foundation People’s Choice Award on the Friday night. Contestants’ dance style, choreography, music and what they are wearing – kept secret until the opening night – are expected to wow the crowd.

Dancing with Purpose

NBS Dancing for a Cause is more than just a dazzling event. It’s one of the most significant hospice fundraisers in the country, shining a much-needed spotlight on the critical palliative care services provided by Nelson Tasman Hospice – a lifeline for those with life-limiting illnesses and their whānau.

Nelson Tasman Hospice CEO Tony Gray emphasised the event’s impact:

“This fundraiser makes a real difference to our ability to continue offering free services. We are incredibly grateful to the trustees, contestants, dancers, sponsors, and volunteers who made this year’s event possible.”

The event coincides with Hospice Awareness Week, a national campaign highlighting the essential role hospices play within New Zealand’s health system.

Nelson Tasman Hospice receive around half of their funding from Health New Zealand, leaving a shortfall of more than $4 million a year, needed to be funded through the operation of retail shops. Bequests, donations, events and fundraisers.

A Community United

The local community has responded with remarkable generosity. This year’s contestants have hosted galas, quiz nights, raffles, run a staggering 210km run, and even a G.J. Gardner home build – all contributing toward what is expected to top the $440,000 raised in 2023.

Emma Silke-French praised the camaraderie among this year’s group:

“Watching them support each other, laugh, cry, and grow has been beautiful. From counting steps to dancing with confidence – it’s been a joy.”

Limited tickets are still available via Eventfinda. All proceeds will support the vital work of Nelson Tasman Hospice.
