Motueka Hospice Shop- Back up and running

The Motueka Hospice shop is back up and running after a 6-month repair and refresh project following damage caused by the Boxing Day hailstorm.

The result of this unlikely weather event was the damage to many buildings and homes in the Tasman region. The Hospice Shop, located on High Street Motueka, had internal gutters which filled, overflowed and flooded the ceiling, causing the shop floor to also be flooded ankle deep. The damage to the shop included water damaged ceiling tiles, insulation, lighting, carpets, and internal wiring. Due to the significant damage to the ceiling, civil defence arranged for the Motueka Volunteer Fire Brigade to remove the stock.

The tight-knit community in Motueka banded together to help those affected in moving and drying the stock that was caught in the chaos. Nelson Tasman Hospice was offered the lease of a ‘pop up’ location at 79 High Street, which meant the fundraising could continue and that stock wasn’t sitting idly awaiting the shop repairs.

The Hospice is always so humbled by the support from the community. We’d like to thank Danielle Bridges from Bridge Finance for the lease of 79 High St; Bruce Whitwell for project managing the repairs at 226 High St; Laser Electrical for seeing to the damage to the wiring and arranging the driers that allowed other repair work to commence; Motueka Volunteer Fire Brigade for aiding in the recovery of stock trapped by the damage to the building; and the plethora of volunteers and members of the community who helped us move stock and set up the pop-up shop.

Hospice could not have done this without the support of the community.  To all our lovely customers and donors, the shop is now open 7 days.  All funds from the regions Hospice shops support the $2.5million funding gap that Nelson Tasman Hospice must raise year to deliver its services.
